problems with theRPGsite
theRPGsite is having some DNS problems due to a screwup in transferring the domain name. It looks to be temporary, though. Explanation at http://www.xanga.com/RPGpundit/570093678/item.html

People who don't understand DNS should either get someone else to do it or learn how it works. IMHO.

Yeah, I don't know the exact problem. Pundit, bless him, is a hoary old Luddite, but how hard is it to design a web interface that walks you through setting up an A record? Supposedly it's been fixed but if so, the current delay looks to me like it's at the DNS provider, as opposed to just propagation lag.

Ah, that's different then.

Propagation lags are, of course, the norm, but clients are still surprised that when they're told their site might be down for 0-72 hours depending when in the world people are accessing it from.

Here's why I think it's more than propagation lag

Basically, the DNS servers listed in WHOIS are denying that they're authoritative.

I can't believe Godaddy doesn't have a simple template that creates a zone file for you...so either Pundit's help have made a mistake while trying to write one by hand or godaddy is messing up somehow.

I had a similar problem when I started up animalball. The problem is getting your host to coordinate with your domain registry-- I had a two day lag before they figured it out because I'm as ignorant to these things as Pundit. What I'm worried about for Pundit is that godaddy is such a service poor site that even figuring out what the problem is may take a couple of days. Do we know who's hosting the site?

Looks like everything is okay now

The problem was that the DNS servers listed in the registration at godaddy were NS1.GO180.NET and NS2.GO180.NET. Those servers had no idea who therpgsite.com was. Now that the registration info has been updated to use secureserver.net's servers, things are better.

I think the residual problems will clear up as DNS info propagates.

Yeah, it works for me at work, but not at home (as of this morning).
